 SJV PreK 4 Class of 2025-2026

My name is Mrs. Gertrude Rodriguez and I will be your child's teacher. This September I will be teaching for thirty-six years at St. John Vianney. My assistant is Mrs. Valerie Tennant.

 This year your child will begin an exciting and rewarding journey in a nurturing and learning environment.  The learning experiences they will encounter will coincide with opportunities for discovery, self-expression, and socialization.  

 Your children will be in a Pre-School Program in which they will not only learn to socialize with their peers but also participate in many interactive learning experiences in preparation for Kindergarten and the future.

 By the end of the school year, your child should be able to identify and write upper and lowercase letters;  recognize letter sounds and beginning letter sounds in words; recognize their first and last name and use of proper lettering; recognize sight words; identify basic shapes and colors; identify and write numerals 1 to 30; and rote counting.  Many concepts will be covered that will be further explored in Kindergarten such as classifying, sorting, patterning, rhyming words, parts of a book, recalling story characters and events, and scientific topics such as weather, seasons, animals and their habitats, recycling, and simple experiments. 

 Children are taught that all families belong to one larger family which is God's family.  We learn that we are the future peacemakers of tomorrow.  Through our daily prayers, songs and stories, we learn to care, respect, and accept all people according to God's teachings.

 Meeting the needs and recognizing the strengths of each child is essential for me to know as their teacher.  My goal is for your child to succeed throughout the school year!  Always review and reinforce all work done in school.  Your child will take pride in whatever they do.  As a team working together we can make your child's learning experience become a success story.  Thank you!

Religion:  Daily prayers and songs; Children's Bible Stories; Feast of St. Blaise; Ash Wednesday; Lent

Phonics:  Upper/lowercase letter Nn, Oo, Pp, Qq; reviewing letters Aa - Qq;  letter sounds, naming items that begin with each letter; hidden letters; tracing; writing; matching partner pairs - upper and lowercase letters; counting the beats/syllables of words; reading simple sight words; matching beginning letter sounds to pictures; ending sounds; rhyming words

Reading:  Who is an author and illustrator, parts of the book (front, back, spine, title page)

Math: Counting numbers 1 to 30; color coding numbers; bingo dotting numbers; missing numbers; introduction of the number line; matching numbers; money - penny, quarter; sorting coins; tracing/writing numbers; counting and recording amounts; patterning; pie graph

Concepts: Shorter/longer; opposites; twins - same

Assessing:  Alphabet recognition Aa - Zz; shapes; colors; numbers 1 to 30; holding pencil, crayons, scissors; cutting; following directions; listening

Spanish - Short conversational sentences, days of the week, months, identifying items at school, greetings, colors, songs.
